Biography:

Short version:

Matt has many years of experience working at the elite end of rehabilitation and performance.  Matt qualified as an osteopath in the 90's and went on to train with the CHEK Institute, leaders in exercise education.  Since completing the CHEK Certification, Matt has presented here in the UK and abroad, as well as being asked to write for various publications.  In 2006, Matt was teaching in New York when a student walked in wearing a pair of Vibram Fivefingers. By 2007, Matt had set up Primal Lifestyle to distribute Vibram Fivefingers to the UK. Since then, Matt has continued to work clinically, to present, write and develop his own ideas around living a more Primal Lifestyle.

Detailed version:

Matt qualified as an osteopath & naturopath from the British College of Naturopathy & Osteopathy (now BCOM) in 1997.   He spent his first year in practice in New Zealand where he first saw Paul Chek speak on his concept of Primal Patterns. Having been heavily inspired by the work of Phill Beach and his concept of archetypal postures, Matt was intrigued by Paul's work.  In 1998, Matt returned to the UK to work clinically as well as to teach on the faculty at BCOM and embark on an MSc in Osteopathic Medicine.  While teaching at BCOM, Matt taught alongside Phill to glean deeper insight into his views; and concurrently purchased a home certification course from the CHEK Insitute to assist in the development of his Master's thesis on Hamstring Strain in Professional Footballers. When the course arrived from the CHEK Insititute, the information was mind-blowing - it was years ahead of anything Matt was studying in the current literature for the his Master's thesis - yet the materials had been filmed in 1993 - some 7 years previously.  Also during his Master's degree, Matt wrote to Adidas to suggest they create a shoe, similar to their low-profile T'ai Kwon Do shoes, but with the toes in individual pockets so that they could splay naturally and function independently.  Adidas rejected the idea.

In 2001, Paul Chek was touring over to the UK for a seminar series, Matt booked onto every seminar offered and from there decided to embark on the 4-year certification program with the CHEK Institute.  During this period, Phill Beach emigrated to New Zealand and Matt was invited to take over his role at the BSO.  He continued to teach at BCOM and to teach as a guest lecturer at Oxford Brookes and LSO osteopathic colleges - both at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. Matt also published some of his work on Hamstring Strain in the JBMT (Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies), won best young researcher at the International Conference on Advances in Osteopathic Research in Melbourne and began working with first-teamers from Surrey County Cricket Club during this period.

In 2005, Matt was invited to sit on the Editorial Board at JBMT, to start training as CHEK Faculty and to consult with Chelsea FC.  Matt's presentation at the Football Association's International Medical Conference that year resulted in him being asked to consult with the Charlton Athletic medical team.  At this time, Matt was offered the opportunity to write a chapter for a natural medicine textook, commissioned by Leon Chaitow.  The general theme Matt took with this 100+ page chapter was to dig into evolutionary movement principles, combining Chek's, Beach's and, another free-thinker, Tetley's work, to create a system Matt termed "Biomechanical Attractors".  As a component of the research for this, Matt had started digging into the literature on the benefits of being barefoot.  In 2006, while co-teaching a course in New York, a student walked in wearing a pair of Vibram Fivefingers.  Matt was taken aback, as this was exactly what he'd had in his mind's eye when writing to Adidas some 7 years previously.  After class that night, the student took him straight to the store that sold them and Matt bought a pair.  Realising that this product was the future of functional footwear, Matt immediately wrote to Vibram and explained that he would happily feature them in his rehabilitation chapter.  At this point, Vibram still hadn't realised that there were biomechanical benefits to the shoes (for more details see here [INSERT LINK]), and the discussions eventually led on to Matt becoming Vibram's UK distributor the following year in July 2007.

Since then, Matt has worked clinically with elite sprinters and a range of different sportspeople, he has gone on to become Co-Editor of the Rehabilitation section of JBMT, he has presented at many events discussing barefoot and minimalist footwear training and has presented several of his own models and concepts to Symposia all around the world.  Matt is one of 2 CHEK Faculty that teach the first 4 levels of the CHEK Certification program, and has successfully grown the Vibram Fivefingers brand in a relatively hostile marketplace over the last 7 years; leading the shift in awareness of the benefits of barefoot conditioning, and living a more primal lifestyle.

Hi Matt,

Just wanted to say what a great evening it was last night.

Both talks from Serge and yourself were awesome. It really helped me understand some of the things I already knew, but on a deeper level.

Being a presenter myself, I really appreciated the visuals which were vital to help understand what can be complex issues. LB

The evening was very well organised and it was great to meet up with fellow practitioners and see old faces again.

Dear Matt,
I am writing to express my appreciation of your presentation, along with Serge Gracovetsky, last week...  I found both presentations very enlightening, teaching me things I had never even considered before about how our movement patterns evolved and why this is important.

Dear CHEK Practitioners, NLC's, and Golf Biomechanics,

In preface to this important announcement from Matthew Walden
regarding a RARE opportunity to experience a "MUST SEE" presenter,
Serge Gracovetsky, I would like to let you know that the study of Dr.
Gracovetsky's work gave me a huge leap forward back in 1990. I took a
course by well known NZ physiotherapist John Oldham (lives and
practices in Vancouver, B.C.) at Oregon Health Sciences University at
that time. The course included a comprehensive cadaver dissection and
was based on the book, "The Spinal Engine". Dr. Gracovetsky's
concepts are logical, scientific, and most importantly, applicable to
our work as CHEK Practitioners. Matthew Wallden will lecture behind
Dr. Gracovetsky. Those of you that know Matthew know that he is very
devoted to mastery of the human body and I'm sure you will enjoy his
lecture. I've personally seen some of Matthew's slide shows and they
have all been interesting and exciting, even in the walkways of
coffee shops of Brighton! With that in mind, please view the
announcement below:

Have Fun and say hello to Dr. Gracovetsky for me!

I wanted to let you know that the Primal Bootcamp was an amazing experience. I have come back to my normal life with quite a different perspective on a lot of things. I felt absolutely fantastic for the week after and was on a definite high, still buzzing from the weekend.  Thank you!

Don't hesitate to go, it could be life-changing. Keep an open mind and try before dismissing. Realise that not everything is readily applicable for clients in the short-term but is the way the industry needs to go in the long-term.

Don't hesitate to go. Keep an open mind and remember that true health and fitness is a life long journey, not a quick fix.

the Primal Lifestyle Bootcamp is an inspired idea and I can't wait to do more.

What would you say to a client or non-health/exercise professional considering attending the next bootcamp? GO! as it will help you achieve your goals

Dear Matthew,
Just a short note to congratulate you on your talk at the evening at Arsenal. Not easy to follow a speaker as confident and well-known as Jerry Gilmore.
I thought you brought the osteopathic concepts together well – the only shame was hat you didn’t have a chance for Q’s & A’s, but with the meeting starting late and the previous speaker over running…!
Anyway, it was interesting to see such a thriving arena of football therapists and your involvement with these elite footballers is just another example of that fact that we are getting taken more seriously (- and also demonstrates why!)
All the best.  Yours sincerely,

1. Great article!
2. THANK YOU MATTHEW for beautifully referring to my work in the body of the article, and referencing me beautifully! You are a great example for others to follow Bud!
3. That I'm very proud of you Matthew. Your capacity to manage, synthesize, and utilize complex concepts is unparalleled Bud. I really am grateful that you have been so instrumental in establishing credibility for my work in the professional rehab/medical circles. It's important that we keep stimulating that market as I don't want the CP base to be too personal trainer dominant. We need lots of professional medical and other allied medical professionals in the program to keep the multidisciplinary, holistic model alive and well.
Great Respect and Admiration for Matthew Wallden
